Why Your Electrical Panel Matters
Your electrical panel — also called a breaker box or load center — distributes power from the utility grid to every circuit in your home. Circuit breakers inside the panel protect those circuits from overloads by tripping and cutting power when too much current flows through a wire.
When a panel is too old, too small, or manufactured with known defects, it can no longer do this job reliably. The result can be anything from nuisance tripping and insufficient capacity all the way to breakers that fail to trip at all — allowing dangerous overloads and increasing the risk of electrical fire.
Your electrical panel is the hub of your entire home’s power supply. When it’s outdated, undersized, or failing, it puts your home — and everything connected to it — at risk. Safety 1st Electrical Services installs modern, properly sized electrical panels for homeowners throughout Peachtree Corners, Gwinnett County, and the surrounding northeast Atlanta area.

Signs You May Need a Panel Upgrade
- Circuit breakers trip frequently and reset doesn’t hold
- You have a fuse box rather than a circuit breaker panel
- Lights dim when large appliances start up
- You need to run extension cords because there aren’t enough outlets
- You’re adding a major appliance, EV charger, or home addition
- Your panel is a known problematic brand (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic)
- Your panel is 25 or more years old
- You smell burning near the panel or see scorch marks
- Your homeowner’s insurance has flagged your panel
If any of these apply to your home, contact us for a panel assessment. Some situations are urgent — don’t wait if you’re noticing burning smells or scorch marks.
Panels That Should Be Replaced
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok Panels
FPE Stab-Lok panels were installed in millions of American homes between the 1950s and 1980s and have a well-documented history of breaker failure. These breakers may fail to trip during an overload or short circuit — the exact situation they’re designed to handle. If your home has an FPE panel, replacement is strongly recommended.
Zinsco Panels
Zinsco panels (also sold under the GTE-Sylvania name) have similar problems. The breakers in these panels are prone to melting and fusing to the bus bar, preventing them from tripping when needed. Like FPE panels, Zinsco panels are flagged by home inspectors and many insurance carriers.
Fuse Boxes
Homes with original fuse boxes are running electrical infrastructure that may be 50 to 80 years old. Beyond the capacity limitations, fuses can be replaced with the wrong amperage rating — a dangerous and unfortunately common workaround. A modern circuit breaker panel is the safe, practical upgrade.
Undersized Panels
A 60-amp or 100-amp panel that was standard for decades often can’t support the demands of a modern household — especially with central air conditioning, multiple large appliances, home offices, and the growing popularity of EV chargers. We size and install panels that meet today’s needs and leave room for tomorrow’s.

Our Panel Upgrade Process
Assessment
We evaluate your current panel, your home’s electrical load, and your future plans to recommend the right panel size and configuration. We’ll also identify any associated work — such as service entrance upgrades or wiring issues — that should be addressed at the same time.
Estimate & Planning
You’ll receive a clear written estimate before any work begins. If utility coordination is required (for service upgrades), we’ll outline that process and timeline as well.
Installation
Panel replacement requires a temporary power shutoff for the duration of the installation. Our team works efficiently to minimize the time your home is without power. All work is completed to current Georgia electrical code.
Inspection
Panel replacements require a permit and inspection in Georgia. We handle the permit and coordinate the inspection to ensure your new panel is signed off cleanly.
