Why Your Home’s Wiring Matters
Your electrical wiring is the infrastructure that everything else depends on. When it’s in good condition and properly installed, it quietly and safely powers your home. When it’s old, damaged, or undersized, it becomes a hidden hazard — one that can cause fires, shocks, and equipment damage long before any visible warning signs appear.
Wiring issues are particularly common in older Georgia homes, where original wiring may have been installed decades ago under different code standards, with different materials, for a fraction of today’s electrical load. Additions, renovations, and DIY projects over the years can also introduce wiring problems that aren’t immediately obvious.
Faulty, outdated, or damaged wiring is one of the leading causes of residential electrical fires in the United States. If your home’s wiring hasn’t kept pace with modern demands — or was never up to code to begin with — Safety 1st Electrical Services can help. We provide professional wiring and rewiring services for homeowners throughout Peachtree Corners, Gwinnett County, and the surrounding northeast Atlanta area.
Signs Your Home May Need Rewiring
Not sure whether your wiring needs attention? Watch for these warning signs:
- Lights that flicker or dim unexpectedly
- Circuit breakers that trip frequently
- Outlets or switches that feel warm to the touch
- A burning smell anywhere in your home
- Discoloration or scorch marks around outlets or switch plates
- Outlets that spark when you plug something in
- Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets throughout the home
- A home built before 1980 that has never been rewired
- Known aluminum or knob-and-tube wiring
If you’re experiencing any of these, contact us to schedule an assessment. Some of these issues can be addressed with targeted repairs; others may indicate the need for a partial or full rewire.
Wiring Issues We Commonly Address
Aluminum Wiring
Aluminum wiring was widely used in homes built during the late 1960s and 1970s as a lower-cost alternative to copper. Over time, aluminum connections can loosen and oxidize, creating heat buildup at outlets, switches, and fixtures — a significant fire hazard. We address aluminum wiring through copper pig-tailing at connection points using approved connectors, device replacement with CO/ALR-rated equipment, or full rewiring depending on the extent and condition of the wiring.
Knob-and-Tube Wiring
Found in homes built before the 1950s, knob-and-tube wiring has no ground wire, uses insulation that deteriorates with age, and simply wasn’t designed for modern electrical loads. Many insurance companies refuse to cover homes with active knob-and-tube wiring, or charge significantly higher premiums. Full rewiring is typically the recommended solution.
Undersized or Overloaded Wiring
As homes take on more appliances, HVAC systems, home offices, and EV chargers, older wiring can become undersized for the load it’s being asked to carry. We install new circuits and properly sized wiring to handle your home’s current and future demands.
DIY and Non-Code Wiring
Over the years, many older homes accumulate wiring work done by previous owners without permits or professional knowledge. We identify and correct non-code wiring, buried junction boxes, improper connections, and other issues that can create hazards and complicate future work.

How We Approach a Rewiring Project
Assessment
Every rewiring project starts with a thorough assessment of your home’s existing wiring, panel, and electrical load. We identify what needs to be addressed, what’s in acceptable condition, and what the most efficient path forward looks like for your specific home.
Written Estimate
We provide a clear, itemized estimate before any work begins. You’ll know exactly what’s included, what it costs, and how long the project will take.
Professional Installation
Our licensed electricians complete all wiring work to current Georgia electrical code, using quality materials rated for the application. We work carefully to minimize disruption to your walls and ceilings wherever possible.
Inspection & Sign-Off
All permitted wiring work is inspected by the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). We coordinate the inspection process and ensure your work passes cleanly.
